Art 1 Final Portfolio

1. My favorite project of this semester was the printmaking project we did at  the beginning of the semester. I think that this project was my most successful project because I already knew how to carve my drawing out of the linoleum because I took a printmaking elective at my middle school. I really liked how I carved the spots out of the giraffe instead of carving around the spots of the giraffe to create negative space. I think the hardest thing about this project was probably just getting the ink nice and evenly spread by using the brayers. I really liked my choice of ink too because instead of doing the colors of the giraffe I did something a little bit more abstract. We started this project by drawing an animal of our choice in its habitat in our sketchbook. We then traced over it with tracing paper and transferred it over to the linoleum. After we had traced over the linoleum, we cut out the pieces to create our picture and then we chose our ink and printed it. Overall I really liked this project and wished that we could have done more printmaking this semester.

 2. I think that I learned the most from the game drawing. As much as I hated this project, I really think that my drawing has improved from the beginning of this semester, and I think this picture proves it. Perspective was a little bit easier for me because it was basically all lines and you had to connect them all at the vanishing point. The goal in the game drawing was to make it look like the game was real by using different values and adding watercolor. I think I learned that a lot of the stuff that we learned in this course come back in different units such as values and watercolor. I also learned how important including values were in this project because in order to make things more realistic, you have to add more colors and shadows. The hardest part about this project was probably doing the letters on the game board in the right perspective. I do think that I could have colored heavier on certain parts to make it stand out more

3. The landscape painting project was another one of my favorite projects because it was just so much easier for me. I think it was easier for me because painting is much more forgiving than drawing because you can just paint over something that you messed up on. I used many skills that we learned this semester in my painting. In almost every project we had to focus on value, especially this one. The values had to change from light to dark as you came forward and you had to make sure that where there were shadows that there was darker paint. You also had to use perspective in your painting so that it kind of looked like the shapes in your painting were more realistic. I really liked mixing the acryllic paints to get different values to paint on my canvas. I also really liked making the clouds and adding the different values such as pinks, whites, blues, and greys to make them look more like the sky. Overall I think this project used the most skills because it required drawing, color values, mixing paints, painting, and drawing in perspective.

4. I think the least important project was probably the chalk murals. As much as I liked working in a group and working with the chalk, I think there could have been a better way to teach the value concept. I just think that we could have done like a drawing that shows values instead of using chalk, like the game drawings or the anamorphosis drawings. I also didn't like this project because I think some people weren't on task and made the other people do more of the work. It makes the project more stressful when not everyone is working together. It's not that I didn't like the project, its just that I would have much rather have done like a colorful drawing instead of using chalk to figure out how to use values in my artwork. I wish that we could've done like a drawing of a landscape including values or maybe have done more painting on canvas. I really just don't like drawing.

5. I think that the clay tile art project reflected me the most as an artist because pottery is one of my favorite forms of art. I also think that this project reflects me because it also used painting which was another one of my favorite units. Red Pandas are one of my favorite animals and I enjoyed making it out of clay. I really enjoyed painting this because we could use copper acrylic paints and I liked making my animal sparkly. I learned about the Red Panda in 6th grade when I did a science project on it. I learned that they live in the Himalayas and are an endangered species. I chose the Red Panda because I really liked the habitat it lives in and thought that it would be easy to make it out of clay. Mountain forests are one of my favorite habitats because my favorite place to go on vacation is Vermont and they have lots of mountains and forests there.
